Human Poop Could Be A Green Energy Source, Israeli Researchers Say

They digitized the human poop by creating an emoji. Now they are looking forward to turning real poop into reusable energy! Researchers from a university in Negev discovered the real potential of human excreta and how it can be transformed into a reusable fuel and safe nutrient rich fertilizer.

Hydrothermal carbonization is a chemical process used for heating solid human waste inside a pressure cooker, and it transforms into hydrochar, which is a reusable biomass fuel that has similar features to charcoal. IR spectroscopy knowledge is used for studying hydrochar structures and the functional groups that are involved.

Library of spectra is a platform that is essential for identifying the associated functional components and groups. A maximum carbon recovery of 90% can be achieved by adjusting physical conditions such as temperature, amino acids, concentration of salts and time of reaction.

Since according to World Bank, only 5% of urban wastewater is treated according to government standards in Indonesia. Thus sanitation becomes a global crisis.

These findings have the potential of helping the issues concerning energy deficit and waste disposal. This is all the more necessary because of the rapid increase in energy demand per capita expectedly peaking in 2030 according to the guardian.

Professor Amit Gross, who is the director of Zuckerberg Institute says that human excreta is hazardous because they increase the probability of spreading diseases. It might have nutrients like potassium, nitrogen, and potassium, human waste also has micro pollutants from pharmaceuticals which have adverse effects leading to environmental problems if not handled with utmost care.
