Hungary to Build $1 Billion Green-Powered Town From Scratch

As the governments around the world get more and more conscious about the growing need to protect the planet, the search for alternative energy source that will provide the highest environmental benefits has been of great importance.

Just recently, Hungarian government expressed its intension to create a green-powered town on a barren strip of Danube flood plain. Entailed in the said project of course, is the plan to create jobs and housing for thousands.

With over $1.1 billion of investment from FAKT, a German property investment company, the country is looking at a 1.27 square mile horticultural and infrastructure project that could create 5,000 permanent jobs along with having a model town that will utilized energy drawn mainly from solar and biogas; setting the lead for other conversion sites across the continent, including coal regions making the switch to clean energy.

A Landmark for Greening Europe

The project package is complete with socio-structural plan that includes about 1,000 homes, a restaurant, hotel, rail station, shopping facilities as well as schools and training units. With this green energy project comes a sustainable water management policy that aims to avoid lowering the area’s water table. Cooling will be supplied via geothermal plants.

Hungarian Agriculture Minister Istvan Nagy told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle,of the project as a would-be “landmark for Europe,” incurring investment that is “the biggest and most complex agricultural and food industrial project of the last few decades and is unique in Central Europe“.

Among the high expectations of the project is how it would boost even more the growth of the greenhouse horticulture sector, which is, in fact, the EU’s fastest-growing agricultural sector. It will, according to Nikolai Ulrich, a board member of FAKT, do a great help in increasing the supply of tomatoes, peppers and aubergines and “the site will host Europe’s largest inland fishery, cultivating salmon, bass and sea bream”.

Green power is a subset of renewable energy and represents those renewable energy resources and technologies with great environmental benefits. .  It is electricity produced from solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, eligible biomass, and low-impact small hydroelectric sources.
